  2. Actually, medicinal chemistry is a branch of organic chemistry. Yes, there are some drugs on the market that are inorganic, (Rolaids, Alka Seltzer, Simethicone) and even some that are on the market for the treatment of cancer (Cisplatin), but the vast majority of medicinal chemistry is directed towards making novel small organic molecules with beneficial biological activity. As for natural products, yes, there is even a branch of pharmaceutical chemistry / organic chemistry that is directed towards the identification of naturally occurring compounds that possess therapeutic properties - this discipline is called Natural Products Chemistry.

As for a book recommendation on medicinal chemistry, I would suggest the following...

"Medicinal Chemistry: An Introduction" by Gareth Thomas. This book is good for those who have completed 1-2 semesters of organic chemistry. It's a good place to start.

Glad to hear that someone is interested in doing what I've been doing for the last 15 years! Good luck!!!

  3. Its not branch of anything. Organic chemistry deals with the basic elements C, H and O. In organic chemistry deals with other elements. So, the Medicinal chemistry basically involves both the organic and inorganic chemistry.
