Question:

Typical Ferret Behavior?

I recently bought a 20 week old male ferret from a pet store after doing a lot of research and spending a lot of time with my mother in law's 8 ferrets. So far I am not seeing what I would expect to be "typical" behavior. He has never once nipped or acted aggressive which is good. He only sleeps for short periods of time before he is wide awake, he does not poo in corners, but along the walls or around his food/water dish and even bedding instead, he does not sleep in his hammocks or blankets but would rather move everything around and sleep on the plastic of his cage (I keep my home around 70-75 degrees on average). He has no interest and completely ignores squeaky toys, which I always thought was a pretty good way of getting their attention. He does have his own room that I have made up for him full of toys, fun boxes, everything a ferret should love but would rather just sniff stuff or scoot his belly along the carpet instead of actually playing. Does he sound normal? =)

  1. AWW...Well he is still a baby when he gets older he will sleep in the hammock and stuff hes probably scared of it leave it in the cage so he can get used to it place him on the hammock and stuff

  2. He's still a baby and it's pretty normal for young ones to act like this. Just wait till he gets a little bit older, he'll be a little devil :X

He should start playing with his toys once he's older and also start sleeping in his hammock once he figures out what its for.

You'll need to teach him to be litter trained, that's not something that he'll automatically know how to do. What I do is put a litter pan in 1 corner of their cage, put some of his p**p in it[yes, gross] then he should learn to start pooping there.

    Good luck!

  3. All animals are different, and by luck of the draw you happened to pick out a calmer ferret.  Unless you don't have a job and you're home 24 hours a day with much of the time available to devote to the little guy, the ideal situation would be that he would have another ferret to hang out with.  Ferrets should really be kept in pairs, lest they begin becomming aggressive.

  4. Well, maybe you just haven't found a toy he really likes yet. I had 2 ferrets and they each had one toy they liked and would hide but they wouldn't even bother with any of the other toys. Squeaking actually isn't good for their ears. Try getting a toy that rattles. My girl had a snake toy that rattled and she loved it!

The moving stuff around is completely normal, mine did that all the time. They like to have things just the way they like it.

For the litterbox training try putting some of his"presents" in the litterbox and clean wherever else he goes to persuade him to always go to the box.

Maybe he deosn't like sleeping up high, like in hammocks. Get him a soft ferret bed and see if he likes that.

try "tickling" him and interacting with him and see if he will play more.

I suggest getting him a friend and maybe he will play more, they are very social and love to "dook" around with each other!

Good luck, i hope i helped!
