UNLV Engineering school?

Question

I will be going to graduate school at UNLV to get my master's in in Electrical Engineering this fall.

Any pros and cons about UNLV? i.e. How Teachers approach Labs, HW and the rest....

I will appreciate it so much.

My daughter was accepted there, in the Engineering school for an MS in Transportation. The campus looked great when we were there in June. The reason she ended going to Marshall in West Virginia instead was that she could never get anyone at UNLV to return messages in a timely manner. And when we went there for a pre-arranged interview, the interviewer never showed up and no one could find him.

They said they really wanted her because her undergraduate thesis was on reducing the death rates on remote interstates and she specifically studied the I-15 between Barstow and Las Vegas as to why the death rate there was three times higher per lane mile than on interstate highways elsewhere. They felt that by continuing her research she could really help the tourism industry in Vegas. Too bad the administrators did not seem to care.

On the other hand, the Marshall people were always on the spot with prompt answers and people were always available. She will be starting a research program in the fall with the Appalachian Transportation Institute.

I hope you have better luck at UNLV getting people to pay attention to you.

Both my hubby and myself attended UNLV.  My husband earned his masters' degree in Computer Science in 2002.  Going by what he tells me, most of the "busy" work will be towards the ultimate goal, your thesis. My hubby's thesis was about wormholes, and he had to fly in a prof from France the week he defended his thesis. Be prepared to think outside the box.    Expect many meetings with your faculty adviser. As for labs, most Graduate level classes at UNLV are small.  You may be in a position that you will do labs independently. I know this isn't exactly what your looking for, but I hope it helps.

UNLV is a small college several miles from Strip.  Instructors expect you to be independent as more than half of the students are part-time, hold a full time job, and over 30.
