  1. USC and UCLA are very similar, except that USC is private and UCLA is public. So, if you're a CA resident, USC costs $37,800/year and UCLA costs $7,500/year in tuition and fees. Because of that, UCLA tends to attract more Californians (90% of students), and USC has a broader enrollment. That also means competition is even tougher for out-of-state students at UCLA.

I toured both of them as a prospective student once upon a time. The education at both is stellar so admission is very competitive. Both are well known for being large research universities, and the number of students is pretty close (33k- 36k). I was interested in the arts programs and they are practically identical in that respect (top film/ theatre schools), but I was more attracted to USC's program because it was smaller and more personal/individualized. Both have nice, sprawling campuses in LA, but USC's is in a more ghetto neighborhood. They really get behind their sports teams and have one of the most intense rivalries. USC has a very active Greek life (maybe better?) and UCLA has a Greek system as well. As far as partying goes, I'm sure it's the same at either place. Since they're pretty close, sometimes students from both schools will party together.

If I were you, I'd look into the programs/majors each school offers that you're interested in to see which school will cater to your ambitions better. Tour both to get a feel for the campuses and talk to current students and professors- maybe then one will stick out to you. And take cost into consideration as well, since there is a huge difference.

And yes, there are several other great colleges on the West Coast. It all depends on what you're looking for and what your program will be.

  2. i think USC, but its more expensive.
