Urgent race and gender?

What connection if any is there between science and ideas about race and gender?

There are scientific studies about how the biological differences between the genders have an impact on behavior and whether the biology may account for any of the differences in the roles of genders in society.

With regards to race, there has also been some research done to determine whether different racial groups possess different genetic characteristics that accounts for social differences as well.  One rather infamous book, "The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life"

by Richard J. Herrnstein and Charles Murray, tried to apply science to race.
