Usenet (newsgroups)?

Where are the files that are listed on newsgroups / usenet held ?

Are they servers that belong to the ISP you connect through.... or completely separate ?

It depends on the ISP. Some provider have their own, and others get their "feed" from other servers. They just map their dns name to the other nntp server.
