Usual time between connecting flights?

Is there a minimum amount of time allowed between connecting flights? On my outward journey there is a 5 hour plus wait in Helsinki, but on the return its a mere 1 hour 40. Is that long enough?

A wait of around 3 hours is perhaps the best while using connecting flights. This gives ample time to clear Customs and immigration formalities if any, collect baggage, complete any pre-flight formalities and travel between various terminals or flight gates.

The wait of 1 hour 40 is a bit too short. It's fine as long as you dont have to clear Customs, immigration etc or collect baggage or travel from one terminal to another. It's fine also if you are through checked-in to the final destination. However, if you are required to complete all these formalities, better look for a later flight.

Also, remember to make allowances for any delays in your connecting flight arriving in Helsinki.

As long as you stay within the transit area and your 1st flight isn't late, you'll have plenty of time. You'll most likely receive your boarding passes for both flights when you check-in for your first flight and have your luggage forwarded to your final destination, all you'll need to do is find your gate and possibly go through a security check. 1hr. 40min. or even a little less is plenty of time. I regularly fly an international flight with 45 minutes layover time and on over 25 trips on that flight have never missed my connection.  Don't worry and have fun, unless your first flight is delayed you'll make it, and probably very easily.

Each airport has a different min connect time, and it varies from international and domestic.

1hour 40 mins is fine for almost any situation. If you have to clear customs and immigration it will add some time, but still be suffcient to get you to where you need to be.
