Question:

Vanilla Ice Sunflowers?

I purchased a new variety of sunflower seeds called Vanilla Ice (they are from botanical interests and are all white) and am wondering if anyone else has had any experience with these?

The picture makes it look like they have multiple bloom heads per stock, so I was wondering if I could pinch them back so they are shorter and more bushier (this would possibly result in smaller flowers)

Any other sunflower tips let me know. I'm a first time sunflower grower

  1. I just started with these for my first variety of sunflowers too. Every single seed germinated planted directly in the ground, they are currently about 3' tall, there are multiple bloom heads per stock, and you can pinch them back. They also survived being mowed down by bunnies, and bounced back right away. Depending on how hot it gets where you are, they will benefit from a daily soaking if it is very hot and dry. I have been deadheading, so I haven't collected any seeds yet for next year, but this variety is readily available at the nursery. I also got packets of Strawberry Blonde to try next.
