Question:

Vegetarians/Vegans & jelly...?

How many vegetarians/vegan check that the jelly they consume/buy is not made from beef gelatin?

Or the chips have/haven't been cooked in animal fats?

Do yo think cafes/restaurants should tell V & V's that an item contains animal products if they don't ask?

( Please note I do not mean jam /fruit conserve, I mean wobbly jelly with flavors like port wine, lime, raspberry, lemon etc. )

  1. I read ingredients.  My jelly is organic and has nothing but fruit juice and pectin.  When I do eat chips..they are made with vegetable oil.

  2. I am a vegetarian (aspiring vegan...) So, I pretty much check everything. Gelatin is not vegetarian, kosher, etc...they are all made from some sort of animal. I also have a Gluten-sensitivity, so, naturally I check the labels for everything. I usually shop the organic sections that will usually have the GF (gluten-free) or V (Vegan) as a reference right on the front or list if it is vegan or not!

As far as restaurants go, if they advertise that the meal is vegetarian/vegan, it should be that!! If its just a meal that looks like it doesnt have any meat, etc in it, I ask. Is this vegetarian? What are the ingredients, etc.  I stay away from stuff in restaurants though, like all soups, mashed potatoes, rice mixes, etc. Becuase I believe that you never know what they put in it. Even if you ask, if the person isn't really familiar with veg diets, they may say theres no meat, but really the potatoe soup is made from chicken stock (or something).

I usually ask when eating out, or just avoid anything that could contain (dead) animals stuff.

  3. Evey vegan/vegetarians worth their salt asks b4 buying or eating anywhere, but yes a little sign stating what is used would be helpful.

  4. Most vegans check the ingredients on everything they buy.  I know I sure do.  I also avoid things like high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils.

  5. I think every veggie I know checks for gelatine, animal fats, glycerine, etc. I know I do.

I guess some would rather not know.

I don't think restaurants have that obligation as it is our choice to avoid these products and if they listed ingredients to cover every ethical and ethnic groups food choices, menus would be very hard to read!

I think though, that staff should be educated as to the ingredients of each meal (as good restaurant staff are), so that they are able to answer the question "is this soup made on chicken or animal stock?" or any other we may throw at them.

  6. Most vegans I know won't eat things with gelatin in, because of that very reason, and most are also very particular about which brands of crisps they buy, or what restaurants they will order from. Most places don't use animal product in the fryers, both for the vegetarians and also because it's higher in bad fats, and they're trying to improve their image on that front.

But the answer to your question is yes, most of them do check.
