Hi guys, i'll give 10 points best answer for this one, its really important to me. I'm trying to get into vet med (in ireland). The problem is that i found out today that you need to have 555 points (out of 600) in your leaving (equivalent to SATs in states). You also have to have chemistry as your science subject. My huge problem is chemistry is my weakest subject, and i really don't think i could reach those points. Is there any other way to get into veterinay med? Can you go to the britain/states etc? Is there any way i could go into vet nursing and progress to vet med? Or zoology and progress? I've been planning for years, i have references from vets, work experience. Its what i really want to be, always wanted to be. I would do just about anything to get into veterinary. Does anyone know points for equine veterinary? Any help at all is helpful, anything at all... if i seriously cant do veterinary i'll need to look into something else so i need to find out asap. Thanks!

  1. I have heard that people sometimes go to the Caribbean to go to Vet School when they can't get in other places.

Most Universities care less about actual vet experience they seem to be on a cycle of finding people that are more research based and will publish articles rather than actual care of horses etc.

It is unfortunate but that's the cycle now.

Typically in the states you need a 4 year degree in animal science before you can even apply to vet school - can't tell by what info you gave if you are high school or college already.

  2. You can do Vet med in UCD as a graduate.

Basically if you dont think you can get the points then you do a different degree first and then apply.

You can do any degree but they award you points for your degree and a science degree gets you higher points. They also take into account work you've done with animal (volunteering etc.)

Its as difficult to get Vet med in the UK as it is here. I know because originally I wanted to be a vet so I researched all this back then. The US was too expensive for me so I decided on the UCD graduate entry (it turned out that I hated physiology and became an ecologist in the end).

You should still check out the UK courses though, I remember being very impressed with Liverpool (you need all honours 4 A and  2 B) and the Royal School of Vet studies in Edinburgh. They both also have graduate entry systems that require you to have a degree in some sort of biological or animal related area.
