START:Vienna airport

END:Hotel de France(A-1010 Vienna, Schottenring 3,Underground:Schottentor).

Best way to get to the hotel when lugging 26" rollaboards? We are physically fit.

Taxi, CAT, bus, S-Bahn to Wien Mitte? If public transport, U-Bahn or taxi from there? How many stairs and narrow entrance gates for the U-Bahn?

  1. S bahn or CAT to Wien Mitte then on to the U3 (I think)  the maps are easy to follow!!   Don't worry...u will be fine!!

Nothing narrow, and escalator + lifts available.  It is a VERY modern system...

  2. OK, here's my advice. Don't take the CAT, it cost's half an arm and a quarter of a leg and really provides no additional value over the S-Bahn. If you stay in Vienna for more than a day, get a multiple-day ticket right at the Airport's train station (the vending machines can be switched to English). There are several "zones" in the Vienna public transport system, the core one (zone 100) covers all of Vienna, and is the only one tourists usually need. If you buy a ticket for this zone, you only need one additional zone to/from the airport (costs EUR 1,50 each way.)

(Pssst: Conductors and ticket inspectors have a standing order not to fine tourists, so if you're ever found to have the wrong kind of ticket, or no ticket at all, just play the "dumb tourist" card. They don't speak much English, either.)

Got that? Now the actual route: Take the S-Bahn (or CAT if you must) to "Landstraße / Bahnhof Wien Mitte" (Vienna Central Station, not as grand as it sounds). Get out, up the stairs, down the stairs (there are elevators, too), take the subway line U4 (direction "Heiligenstadt"), two stations, get out at "Schottenring". Do like most of the other travellers, simply walk across the the platform, and board the U2. One station only, get out at "Schottentor". The Hôtel De France is 5 minutes walk away, down the "Ring" (the main street there), in the direction the cars are heading, keep on the left hand side, turn left at the next corner.

There you are. Enjoy you stay in Vienna :-)

See the link below for more info on the public transport system.
