Has anyone adopted from Vietnam? What are the price differences between a non-profit adoption agency and a private agency? What are the pros and cons of each? My husband and I do OK finacially- (he is a warrant officer in the army) but adoption is very expensive. I am just trying to find a more economical way to adopt from Vietnam. Thank You for any help you can give!!

  1. I think that there is a suspension of Vietnamese adoptions to the US in 2003.  They've done some major reworking of the adoption procedures, but I don't believe that the suspension has been completely lifted.  According to the state department, only 6 orphan visas were issued to Vietnamese children in 2005, so I'm pretty sure things are heavily restricted.  I'd bet those 6 that were issued had family already in the US.

  2. Are you aware of the ethical concerns going on with Vietnamese Adoptions right now?

  3. First, there is no such thing as an economical way to adopt from VietNam.

Second, when researching an agency, your primary concern needs to be their track record and ethics, and the nature of the humanitarian work they do in the child's home country. Hopefully, the agency will be doing work supporting families in general, with adoption as a secondary concern, and only if other options (ie keeping the family together) don't pan out for the child's family.

Third, adoptions in VietNam are very shaky right now. It has been reopened for not quite 3 years since the moratorium and is poised to shut down again. Any international agency taking on new clients for VN right now should be avoided like the plague.
