I moved from a 34 gb hard drive to a 260 gb hard drive and the virtual memory seems to have stayed the same. The paging file space is 2500 mb but what should I move it to?

  1. You can at least double that.

  2. Assuming you have windows...

    Right click My Computer>

    Properties>Advanced>Settings (performance)>Advanced>Change (virtual memory)>

it's best to split the paging pile between two drives and set a fixed custom size (min and max the same)> Your RAM + page file space should be at least 1GB, and page file space should equal or exceed your amount of RAM if total does exceed 1gb.

  3. Virtual RAM amount does not change with a different Hard Disk.

The amount of virtual RAM depends on your system settings or the custom size set by you yourself and also restricted to your physical RAM size.

To have Windows select the best paging file size, click System managed size. The recommended minimum size is equivalent to 1.5 times the RAM on your computer, and 3 times that figure for the maximum size. For example, if you have 256 MB of RAM, the minimum size is 384 MB, and the maximum size is 1152 MB.

For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives. The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the RAM on your computer. It is good practice to leave the paging file at its recommended size. However, you may increase its size if you frequently use programs that use much memory.

  4. Theoretically you can put in the minimum and max size, 2x the RAM size , so same value. If you put bigger than that, it will have no effect. Relocate the virtual memory to another partition than system partition (normally C). But of course,  it's only virtual memory, not real RAM, so if your RAM is really insufficient, doing this will not help you
