Question:

Virtual portfolio to sharpen skills?

Is there a way to work with Yahoo Finance to set up a "Virtual Portfolio" and track gains / losses? I can set up a portfolio, but there does not appear to be a report which actually shows the "net position" on this portfolio.

  1. Yes, there is.

I'm going to presume you know how to set up a new portfolio under the "my portfolio tab."

Once you do that, you can edit what columns you want to see.  You'll see that it allows you to enter shares and stock price of any stocks you "buy" real or otherwise.

Here are some of the columns you can have for your customized view.

    Portfolios:

    · Shares Owned

    · Price Paid

    · Commission

    · Holdings Value

    · Day's Value Change

    · Holdings Gain & Percent

    · Holdings Gain

    · Trade Date

    · Annualized Gain

Once you get these input, you can click on the "performance" link under the portfolio you set up.  This'll help show you your gain/loss vs. what you paid for it.

    Hope that helps!

  2. Yes, go to create portfolio and select "track your transaction history" and this should set it all up, when you add new buys or sell off current positions, just select "create transaction"
