Vision needed for driving?

How good does you eye sight need to be to be able to drive without glasses?, whats the cut off?. in the UK if that makes a difference.

  1. You must be able to read a numberplate at 20 metres to pass the test in the first place. If you need glasses or contacts to do this, then that's OK but you must then wear them for the test and when driving after passing the test.

    If your eyesight deterioriates after passing the test, you must wear glasses/contacts at all times when driving, to make sure you still comply with the numberplate reading requirement. If your eyesight gets so bad that you can no longer fulfil this requirement, you must tell the DVLA and they will revoke your licence.


  2. you should be able to see a number plate (and read it correctly) at about 20 metres. thats it . I think if you drive without wearing prescription glasses and have an accident, you're insurance is invalid. its an offence not to wear your glasses when driving - so much so that if you cannot read the number plate after 3 attempts on your test -its a fail and they wont let you behind the wheel of a car.
