Visiting canada?

My friend and I (both 16 years old) would like to plan a trip to Montreal in August, but neither of us have passports, and the processing time takes too long to receive one in time. As far as I can tell from researching this, we only need a valid ID (like our licenses) and a birth certificate, etc. to get into Canada.

My question is whether or not this is allowed, because I haven't found any information about people under age 18 traveling alone. I really don't want to be stopped at the border for no reason! (also, our parents gave us permission) Help?!

Okay well you don't NEED a passport. Valid photo ID will work.

But in Canada, 16 year old's can't drive. At least not without an Adult (over 21) with a valid license for the last 5 years in the passenger seat.

You will be better off taking the Bus than trying to drive it. And you can maneuver Montreal on foot anyway.

Check with Greyhound on what they require to cross the boarder.

yes the Id and birth certificate are enough to cross the border,all this will change June 2009 then you will need a passport

as you are a minor you must have written permission from your parents to enter Canada and a phone number where they can be contacted to confirm this

At this time, since you are American, you do not need a passport to visit Canada.  The requirement to need a passport to enter Canada has been delayed at least until the summer of 2009.

Start process your passport. Since both of you had PERMITS from your parents then there's noone will hold you back.

Original birth certificate is all you will require being you are under 18, but if you have government issued id, it does not hurt to have it to show at the border.

Yes you can cross the border unaccompanied, as long as you both have letter of authorization from both your parents. If your parents are divorced and have split custody you will need a letter from each of them, if your one parent has sole custody you will still need the letter from your custodial parent as well as a copy of the custody agreement stating that your parent has sole custody, if one of your parents is deceased you will need a death certificate and the letter from the surviving parent. The letter must state where you are going, where you are staying, how long you will be gone for, who you are going with, and when you are returning, it has to also have all the contact info for your parents, address and any phone numbers they can be reached at. You will also need to get it notarized so that there is no question to the legality of the letter. Both you and your friend need to do this otherwise you will be detained at the border and turned back.

If you are flying you will need a passport there are no exceptions to that.

For a brief time you were allowed to cross the border without a passport, but you did have to show proof that you have filed for one.  As of now, you must have a passport, and since you are underage, chances are you won't be able to go.  A great source to ask further questions would be either a local travel agent, or call the Canadian vistitors guide and see what they have to say about travelers from the US and under 18.  Either way, wait till you 18-at least then you can have a drink with your friends!

You don't need a passport just yet if you are crossing the border by land (air travel requires it). I know this for a fact, having recently crossed the border.

However, since you are underage, you would likely be required to be with an adult crossing the border. Greyhound allows you to ride alone, though I'm not sure if that includes crossing the border. I doubt you would get away with it.
