Volkswagen gets 80mpg?

is that true? i saw it in a magazine a couple of years ago when hybrids were becoming popular and gas prices were up the roof (bout may 2006) and there was a Volkswagen and it was in Germany, not the US.

It probably was true. But, allot of the vehichles made in the US are not made the same either. All the luxuries that we have in our vehichles makes ours weigh heavier, cutting down on the gas milage we get. I have an ex girlfiend who used to live in Germany. She told me that then, and that has been some time ago, that people that had american cars had to lighten them up by cutting out heavier items in their vehicles and replacing them with lighter components or face a gas hog tax that they impose on vehicles that does not meet or exceed their requirements.

They just had an article in one of my popular mechanics mags,not sure what month.They(VW) are coming out with a diesel that is supposed to get like 100 mpg.Maybe you can look it up on either the VW site or Popular Machanics site,it was in one of the issues in the last 6 months.

I'm not sure but Ford just had the new Escape plug-in hybrid at the NY auto show.  That thing gets 140 mpg city and 85 mpg highway

I saw that 80 mpg claim on TV within the last month.  And it was a VW diesel.  There are a LOT of high-mileage vehicles in the works that should be for sale within two or three years.

wrong the VW tdi (turbo diesel) get around 45 mpg

You're probably referring to the VW Lupo, which when driven normally got about 70 mpg.

The Lupo was never introduced in the US because it was tiny, underpowered, and rather cheaply made.

VW is currently working on a Golf diesel hybrid which would get 69 mpg.
