Question:

Volleyball Camps vs Personal Training?

Being the supportive parent I am, I am willing to spend a little money this summer to help my daughter her achieve her goal of being a varsity setter. She is a decent setter, although she is not being challenged on her JO team (even after talking to her coaches). What do you think would be a better option: A 3 day volleyball camp or a 6 week personal training program? The training program would give her more energy and strength, but won't really be focused on volleyball. The camp might help her with her skills, but I am afraid that she might not be challenged in a basic camp with tons of other setters.

Which would you choose?

  1. I think if it is a setter camp and you think her skills need more improvement than her physical fitness you should send her to the camp. But if her skills as a setter are solid and she could benefit from increased speed, endurance and strength send her through the personal training program. If it is personalized make sure they work on her jumping ability and her arm and hand strength.

  2. personal training, that way you can have more attention and do more work because your trainer only has to work with you and nobody else....am i right???

  3. if it is a setters clinic for her age go to that but if it isnt go for the personal training

    OR DO BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. volleyball camps are more fun b/c you make new friends and you'll be more used to working in formations with her team, but a personal trainer means just the two of them and she won't be working with anybody else, just her unlike a real volleyball game, though she'll have more time to prepare and her trainer will help her do better. I would choose the personal trainer, but with each cons and pros of both, best let her decide.

  5. Based on my experience, personal training is really good for long term fitness, special muscle-strength, endurance, etc., but volleyball camp is focusing on fundamentals of the volleyball game (a team-based sport).

If there is no problem with financial arrangement, I would recommend that you send her to both. Normally the camp would put players with different skill levels into different groups so that she will definitely be challenged unless you are going to a first-year camp program.

Since your daughter is a “decent setter” (as you mentioned she is not even challenged on her JO team), you might want to be very careful when selecting a camp. I would send her to a good college, or the college you want her to go, for their summer camp/clinic program. It will get her enough exposure to her future coaches, and hopefully a scholarship in the long run.

If you cannot find a decent camp for her, don't get her bored by sending her to a regular middle school camp or such. In that scenario the personal training program would be a better choice... and you might want to keep her in the program till you can find her a better program, such as the college team gym...

  6. Send her to the volleyball camp as it focuses more on the skills.  If she's really committed to becoming a varsity setter, she should already be doing things she would do with a personal trainer on her own time.  Also, as a setter, I know that setting requires more skill than physical ability, so the camp would be more beneficial.

  7. I think you should go for the 6 week training camp
