Okay, so, i've been setting for three years, and i've played varsity for two years, I'm a sophmore, and i run a 5 1, anyway my sets are good. Now my coach is telling me to change the way i'm setting and to step with my right foot and pivot if i look at the passer. I practiced it for atleast fifteen minutes and i can't seem to get it down. Any tips?

  1. It's quite difficult to learn something new especially after you've got so used to the normal settings. There must be a reason why your coach wanted you to try something new. Your opponents will be guessing throughout the game because of your varieties of settings. Setter is very important and if you only set in one way, the opponents would have know your style.

You need to practice more. Remember, practice make perfect. 15 minutes of training is nothing. I’m sure if you keep practicing, you’ll master it sooner or later. A setter plays an important role in volleyball. You’ll have to learn varieties of settings to be a better player. All you need to do is to stay focus on the ball all the time. Of course, you have to work with your teammates on the strategy as well.

Of all kind of sets, I think ‘jump set’ is the most difficult. You need to catch the timing correctly. If you are playing short spike, you need to time your jumping and set accurately in order to get a good hit.

  2. ok in my gym on our roof theres a long pole and i try to follow the pole while do all the seps including the right foot.

  3. keep working at it! my coach did the same to me.. once i got used to setting and set good, he had me turn the opposite direction to set and to step with my other foot. we even tried jumping a little while i set. it took me forever to get it down but i finally did. it sounds like you have the experience to learn it so keep on trying. hope this helped!!!!

  4. Most teams are doing that now, thats the only way i know how to set. practice the footwork part first. if you can get that down then you can worry about the setting part. just make your self do it over and over. Practice it when you walk around the house, or after you get out of the car. its a simple 2 step thing then when you go to practice it wont feel like volleyball it will feel like another step in your day.
