  1. A 5-1 defense is two players at the net, one at mid court and two at the rear base line.

A 6-2 defense is three players at the net, one at mid court and two at the rear base line.

  2. The 5-1 and the 6-2 are usually used to describe the offense.

The 5-1 means the team uses 1 setter all the way around.  When the setter is in the front row, the team uses 2 front row hitters.  When the setter is in the back row, the team uses 3 front row hitters.

The 6-2 means the team uses the setter from the back row.  They will use 3 front row hitters at all times.

In the 5-1 defense, the setter "usually" plays on the right side.  In the 5-1, the setter usually plays right front when they are in the front row and right back when they play in the back row.

In the 6-2 defense, the setter is in the back row and usually plays right back.  The opposite of the back row setter can be the other usual setter or a sub.  They usually play right front.

  3. 5-1 means 5 hitters and 1 setter.

1 person always sets so you are left with 5 people who can hit.

    6-2 means 6 hitters and 2 setters.

2 setters are positioned at the opposite so when 1 setter is in the front row, the other setter is in the back row.

And the setter in the back row sets so the other setter in the front row still can hit.  Thus, 2 people set and all 6 hit.
