Question:

W-4 and witholding certificate?

I have a question about form W-4 and form G-4. Form G-4 is the employees withholding allowance certificate. Form w-4 is of course the worksheet. On form w-4 I am claiming two allowances. One for being independent and one for being single and having only one job. On form G-4 (allowance certificate) I can only enter 1 for Single. There is nowhere else for the other allowance found on the w-4 to match the employee allowance certificate. Does the IRS go by form w-4 and apply both allowances or do they go by form g-4 and only use the one for single? Please help me figure this out.

Thanks,

Michelle

  1. Form W-4  contains both the worksheet you keep for calculating your allowances, and the actual form (allowance certificate) you give your employers.

I don't see where G-4 is desinnated by the IRS, and the irs website asks if it is a state form.

    Got more info?

  2. You only complete W4; it is employee withholding certificate.

  3. The W-4 is for federal withholding and the G-4 is for state.

These forms work independently from each other in regards to how much you want withheld.

The W-4 has its own worksheet, as does the G-4.

On the G-4, item #5 is used to claim additional allowances.  However, if you enter a number greater than 0, you have to fill out the "Worksheet for Additional Allowances" below.

The IRS does not use or get mailed a copy of your W-4 or G-4 form.  It is only used by your employer for tax withholding purposes.

Your W-4 and G-4 do not have to match.
