Knighthood is designated by the title Sir in England. Knight is the English term for a social position originating in the Middle Ages. In the British Commonwealth of Nations, knighthood is a non-heritable form of gentility, but is not nobility.

There are technically differing levels of knighthood, but in practice these are even more symbolic than the title itself today and thus only express the greatness of the recipient's achievements in the eyes of the Crown.

A baronet or the rare female equivalent, a baronetess, is the holder of a hereditary title awarded by the British Crown known as a baronetcy. It is a hereditary honour but is not a peerage and has never entitled the holder to a seat in the House of Lords. A baronet is styled 'Sir' but a baronetcy is not considered an order of knighthood.

sir is a title given to persons that do a service to the crown, or the state. nowdays, its a government office that sends a list to the queen for suggestions for knighthood. so basically if you become a sir, youre a knight.

Sir, as in Sir John, is the title used by men with knighthoods and by baronets.

A knighthood is a personal honour bestowed on a man for what have been perceived as "good works" in some field or other.

A baronetcy is hereditary  - i.e. is bestowed in similar circumstances as above but it stays in the family. Hece Sir Mark Thatcher bt. - just because Denis was given the title.
