Question:

WIFI connection with no home router?

We are moving house and I will be of 'no fixed abode' so I need to be able to use WIFI. If I download the WIFI wizard on my computer now before I move will that mean that I cannot use my computer through the router at home before I move. Do I have to have a BT connection subscription to use WIFI. Is this the best way to connect to the internet in my situation.

Idiot proof answers would be helpful.

thanks

  1. Obviously Brian ain't English eh!!!

I would pop into your local bt shop or pc world ...they will give you the best advice that's compatible with your pc

  2. english please? No fixed adobe? BT as in blue tooth? Why would you need BT subscription, whch doesnt exist, to use WiFI, which relies on a non existant base station in your case? Repost it.

  3. "Wifi" is a wireless "local" networking solution, so without a router to connect to is will not work (think of it as a phune with no wall socket to plug into)

So without a phone line to use to connect a router to (with ADSL active) your only option is to see if you have an old 56k modem and use "pay as you go" dialup on any landline to connect for 1p/min (ish) or subscribe to a "mobile internet" solution which is expensive and will tie you to a contract of 12 or 18 months

  4. If you have a built in wi-fi card then you can "sniff" for unsecured wireless networks that you may be able to connect to at your location.

Open up your wi-fi connection program and see what networks are found. If you don't see anything in the networks list, then you may have to pony up some money for a wireless connection from a mobile phone company.

    Best Wishes!

  5. Agree with previous answers

(except the one who should learn English himself before he criticises other people... why people answer questions they don't understand is a mystery... ).

Would also add that there are a loads of 'hot spots' in the UK these days, so with a wifi enabled laptop (doesn't say if you have a laptop or desktop) you can log on to t'internet from lots of places including coffee shops... pubs... libraries.

Some are free.... some you need to sign up for... but there are all sorts of plans available, most offer pay by the hour so you don't have to tie into a contract.

Appreciate that's not much use for late night surfing or if you have a destop, but just another possibility.

Link below should help you find what's local to you.

  6. You could buy or take on contract a usb dongle which will let you get online.  3g, vodaphone etc all do them  3g you can buy one for £50 and use it pay as you go or you can get one from £10 per month.  UK only
