Waiting to long to overhand serve?

Question

I am capable of getting the volleyball over the net, but everyone says that i wait to long to hit the volleyball over. I really am powerful, just can't get my arm to get higher. Anyone have any suggestions?

P.S-Volleyball tryouts are coming up, I want to make the volleyball team so bad!! Help me!!

It doesn't necessarily matter how high you reach when you contact the ball to serve.  Sometimes when I am serving a float serve, and I want it to just clear the net, I will only contact the ball about 4-5 inches above my head.  What matters, is where you make contact on the ball, as well as how fast you swing your arm...this is different from how hard you hit it.  You want to make contact in the middle on the back side. Not on the underside, or the top, or off to the side.  I'm guessing this is what you are doing wrong.  And, on top of where you hit the ball, swing your arm fast.  

1. Stand with your dominate arm's leg slightly behind the other, your weight should be on this foot.

2.  Toss while stepping into the ball, if the ball lands, it should be able to hit you in the forehead.

3.  Swing while you rotate your body weight from your back to your front foot.

4.  Drag your back toe to keep your balance.

You have a five count from the time the ref blows the whistle and signals for the serve to serve the ball.  I am not sure what this has to do with your arm strength and getting the ball over the net.

Practice your serving - you will develop a rhythm, and a routine.  I start my serve as soon as the whistle is blown, and I don't look at the ref for the signal - only listen for the whistle.  It is just what I do.  I toss the ball, take two steps and do a jump serve.  It is a rather powerful serve, but not everyone can do it successfully.  I don't play against many women that use the jump serve.  That is my routine serve, but I do whatever serve is working for me that game.  If my serve is constantly going out, I will just stand and serve, which takes some strength off the ball, so it will be a shorter serve for me.

Just find your own serve - practice, develop your serve, and then go into tryouts knowing that there are more aspects to the game than just a serve.
