Question:

Walking a 85 pound Dog ..?

i have a german Shepherd mixed with rot wilier ...(75% rot)

about 1/half years old and 5'6 when on his hind legs

and i have a hard time walking him properly keeps running ahead and going in the front ....anyone know hot to fix this puls i have a other male dog that we walk him too ...

  1. He needs to know you are the pack leader. If you establish this it will also help to use a Gentle Leader collar. He will hate it at first but its in his best interest.


  2. he tries to walk in front because he feels he is the leader of the two of you.  Try and keep him by your side or behind you with a short leash....if the won't adhere don't be afraid to show him who is boss with a tug and a "no" (not in excess of course)


  3. I have a 107lb dane...i know it can be frustrating.

    make sure he knows you are the leader, make him walk in step with you not in front of you, you may need a special Collier or harness, i have one that goes over the back under the front legs is secured over the chest and gose up around the neck and shoulder... it take very little presure, and it was inexpensive at Fred Meyer...

  4. you need to be a stronger alpha leader for your pack. there are many books and websites on this topic.  your dog will do whatever it thinks is ok with you. when you correct him right away and consistently he'll understand the red lines and not cross them. this takes time and most of all consistency.  

  5. Perhaps you could try him with a Gentle Leader or a Halti.  These will stop him pulling you and you'll find he will walk to heel immediately he gets used to the GL or Halti.

    He's a big dog and this will help you to enforce your Alpha role with him because you will be more in control of him and not the other way around.

    I used the GL on my dogs when they were young and it was marvellous.    

  6. you should take your dog to the vet.....he sounds like he's overweight

  7. get a head harness called the gentle leader, it will better control him. is the other male dog hard to walk also?
