roberto duran..I have watched the fight where duran was at least a decade past his prime and 5 weights above his fighting best and was fighting to my mind the best middleweight in history..

It looked like hagler showed him too much respect and on paper would seem like an easy victory stopping duran early in the fight I am sure that with the same mindset he had against hearns he would have KOd him sharpish..No disrespect to either fighter as they are two of my all time favourite fighters.

  2. In the ring, against an opponent armed with only his fists, Marvin Hagler was fearful of no-one.  He had no reason to be, no one his size could hit him hard enough to knock him out.  He did look worried for about a round against Tommy Hearns.

What you may be interpreting as fear was Hagler's frustation.  His strong suit was his infighting ability.  As it so happens, that was also Duran's strong suit.  Marvin was used to opponents withering in that style of fight.  Duran didn't, and I think it gave him trouble.  Something similar to Norton and Ali.  Ali was much better than Norton, but Norton's style screwed up Ali.  Hagler could box, but not on the level Ray Leonard used to outclass Duran, and Hagler could bang, but not on the level Hearns used to demolish Duran.  Hagler, in the ring, was a beast, but he was in a stylistic purgatory in the matchup with Duran.  He still won.

  3. uncle ben haglar? your a jerk!

  4. Mike "The Body Snatcher" McCallum.

  5. Roberto had another big fight in the works (Hearns) if he looked good against Marvin.  From the fourth round on Hagler carried Roberto, Marvin had Duran in trouble, but backed off and didn't press his advantage.  I think Duran knew if he forced the issue Hagler would have KOed him, so Roberto fought to survive.  Hagler let him and took the easy decision instead of taking the risks needed to KO Roberto.  I noticed that Marvin wasn't trying to press the fight, he was content to cruise to an easy decision,    it happens that way sometimes.  I can't see Hagler "scared" against anyone, but he was certainly respectful of Duran.

  6. Marvelous Marvin was my favorite too. If he would have won just 2 of his loses, he would be undisputedly great by all.

  7. I think Marvin showed Duran too much respect in that fight, but you have to give Roberto credit too. He fought a good fight and gave Marvin a lot of upper body movement and also showed a good chin. He took some good shots from Marvin. It was a close fight after 12 rounds and Marvin knew this, so he went after Duran in the championship rounds (fights were 15 rds back then) and became more aggressive and sealed the deal. In fact Ray Leonard said that he had studied how Duran had fought Hagler and felt he could do a lot of the things defensively that Duran did against Marvin.

But Marvin wasn't afraid of Duran at all. I think Duran turned out to be much tougher than he anticipated though.
