I told my black friend that i would beat him like its the first day of slavery at Halo 3 and he got all mad.

You definitely have a very bad sense of humor. Humor is appreciated when you laugh with others, not about others and the comment was no doubt racist an insensitive. Certain topics and situations can never be joked about and slavery is one of them.

No, just insensitive and boorish.  Not every mention of slavery is racist...there were slaves of all colors through out history, but black folks in the US are particularly in tune to the use of the word...so find another amusement.

You need to think about the fact that this guy's ancestors were slaves and suffered very much so because of the whites. So be sensitive to that, and see where his coming from before making statements like that. Yes you were kidding, but you shouldn't kid about things like that to be on the safe side.

Get a sense of humor? Joking about slavery is just as inappropriate as  joking about rape. You just shouldn't do it. Maybe your friend has never said it bothers him because he else wise enjoys being your friend.

Well I wouldn't have said it but you did and you can't change that.  I would apologize and stop the slavery joking because he really might not like it.
