Marathon is the name of a village in Greece.  Way back when, a persian fleet was en route to invade Athens.  The Persians split their forces, the fleet landed part of the army near Marathon and then sailed on to attack Athens directly.  The Athenian sent an army to take on the Persians and won.  They then needed to send the message back to Athens that they had won the day so a runner was sent to run from Marathon to Athens.  The runner made it back, delivered the message and died.
