Psychedelic drugs.  Take them and you will start tripping - you will have an altered perception of reality.  LSD was synthesized by Albert Hoffman from Ergot in the 1940's, I believe.  Shrooms refer mainly to the psilocybin-containing species of mushrooms, Psilocybe.  They were used for centuries in Central America mainly for religious purposes.  They were discovered by western culture in the 1960's (possibly late 1950's).
