  1. Transplant your waterlilies and lotus in spring, at the beginning of the growing season, or toward the end of growing season in fall, before they go dormant. Dividing them into more plants will give them more room to root.

The best thing you can do for both plants is to provide them with vitamins every two weeks during growing season. I use a product called, "Lilytabs." They come in sugarcube-sized tablets that I puch into the soil. You will get a lot of blooms if you find a similar product in your area.

When the weather turns, your plants will naturally die back and go dormat. Even if the water freezes where you live, the bottom 18 inches will remain unfrozen and the plants will overwinter in the frigid water. The key is in buying winter hardy, rather than tropical, plants for your zone. If you think you may have bought tropical, then you need to lift them out of the pond when cold weather sets in, cut them to six inches from the root, dry and store in vermiculite over the winter. Then re-pot them in spring when the temperature of the pond reaches 70 degrees fahrenheit.

May you be rewarded for your efforts with many blooms from these magnificent plants. Water gardening is the greatest fun a gardener will ever have. I go out every morning to see what will bloom in the afternoon and I wait for the buds to open. I watch dragonflies in the afternoons, enjoying the flowers as I do.

  2. Any time will do but obviously they have to be kept in water. Easy to care for. Google is your friend.
