Question:

We have a new kitten!?

I have a 2 year old cat already and we have taken on another cat as it was homeless.

She is a black tortoise shell

The other cat, a 2 year old ginger moggy keeps running away and snarling and growling.

The new kitty has really settled in. She has made herself comfortable on our bed and crimbing all over the couch!

The older cat keeps sniffing the newby.

The way the cat is growling, is that a good or bad thing, or does he feel threatened with the new kitten?

  1. there just getting used to each other its ok for the olther cat to be anoyyed it now has to share its home and terotory but if it gets any more angry and starts to get pyscall then you need to worry just keep a cloes eye on thing you should be fine xxxx good luck hunni xxxx

  2. Cats are very territorial.  The 'old' cat will probably get used to the 'new' one in time, but it might be a slow process.

Its also possible that the 'old' cat just doesnt like the newcomer and will never really adjust to the change....but the hissing and spitting should decrease as they get used to one another.

  3. Your cat will get used to the kitten. He will be hesitant around the kitten for some time but will get use to it sooner or later. Give it a couple weeks. They might even curl up together after a month or two!

When your naming the kitten, you should call it's name a lot and get it used to hearing her new name. After a little while, your kitten should always look at you when you call her name or she should come running to you. Munchkin is such a cute name!

  4. Don't show TOO much favour to your new kitty - she will be allowed to settle in much better if you make sure you give the same attention to your existing cat.

Give HIM treats before you give them to her so he knows he is the most important one - and don't let her steal his food or treats - let him see that she has contstraints.  Equally though - be firm with him.  He has to understand that YOU are the boss - he is just second in command!

He is growling because he is jealous & feels like he is losing you.

Call her whatever you want - just make sure you say the name everytime you pick her up using the same tone.  It's not the name she is hearing - it's the speech patterns you use.

  5. Its not good but its not bad, its just saying that it is uncomfortable with the addition, don't worry though eventually they will get used to each other and become friends

  6. I think your older cat is threatened by the kitten as she came along last, maybe if you show him/her that he/she is still loved by treating them?

  7. just let the cats fight it out if they do.

  8. I think ur cats are telling the newby that this is their terratory.

Thats a cute name,Im naming my new kitten Cookie Mix.

  9. Your male cat is growling because there's a newcomer but that's normal behavior. As long as he only growls and runs off, then he should settle down and get used to the other cat. It'll take a week or two. In the meantime, just keep an eye on him and remove him if he shows real aggression or starts to attack the other cat.
