Not familiar with Weatherby rifles is the .257 big enough to take white tail and black bear. Is $399 a good price its brand new still in box? What is this close to in caliber 30/06, 270 etc.

  1. For white tail, don't buy it.

It will kill deer just fine, but the ammo is very expensive and hard to find.

If white tail is all you are going to hunt, buy a .308. Ammo is abundant and cheap, which will allow you to learn how to shoot well.

For a bit more money and recoil, a 30-06 is a great gun for everything in North America, with the exception of brown bear.

  2. The only Weatherby caliber I would own is the .300, because its the only one thats somewhat "common", but still ridiculously expensive for ammo.  From what I've seen all the Weatherby calibers seem like great performers, but with the newer cartidges ( Rem. Ultra Mags, WSSM, SAUM), I think Weatherbys will become even less poplular than they already are.  I HIGHLY recommend you look at ammo prices for that rifle, some of that stuff is $3-5 a shell, and you will quickly pay more for ammo than you did the whole rifle.  Also, I think the .25 caliber is underbore/underpowered for bear, get a .30 rifle, and you won't be sorry, just my opinion, good luck anyways     PS, my next rifle will be a .300 RUM, you should check out that caliber, it'll outdo the weatherby by a landslide, and ammo is less too.

  3. According to the 2008 Winchester Product Guide Book it is recommended for Whitetail Deer, Antelope, Mule Deer, and Black Bear.* This is using the 117 grain Power point + P ammo

  4. Hold on here....

You're concerned about the price of the gun, but you have no concern about the price of the ammo, or the rarity of the ammo?  You may have a hard lesson to learn here.

Just 9 boxes, or 180 rounds later, you've spent more on ammo than you have on your rifle.  $50 per box of 20 rounds, if you can find it at all.  Why do you think this guy is dumping this rifle for $400?

  5. I wish I owned a 257 weatherby.  It is the ultimate 25 cal.  It shoots flatter than any 270, and with 115-120 g bullets hits just as hard.

For deer and black bear it will do a fine job, and perhaps would do for elk as well.

For varmints, if you do your part it will reach out a long ways to touch them.

The ammo will be pricey unless you handload them, much more so than 270 win.

  6. I agree with Reno the first answer the ammo is expensive the 308 is very abundant. But if you add a pad to the but of the gun the 30/06 is a wonderful rifle and shoots all around any thing big. My personal favorite is a Bow but that's me. I like it close and personal I do carry a side arm for protection but like I was saying to another person a minuit ago but for got to mention I also carry when in season a Marlin 30/30 winchester style rifle shells are cheep less than most and available every where. Luck
