Webcam help with zoom feature?

Question

I want to get a new webcam for the first time, because i need to record me typing something.

I dont want to hold the camera and record it, but im assuming if i leave the webcame on top of my monitor, wire it up to my computer...it will record the actions im doing on my monitor?

I want to know what the zoom feature on the webcam does.

And if i dont have zoom on the webcam, when i record something using that method...would the text be clear?

Please help this stuggling university student.
