Wedding Readings????

We are getting married on Sept 21, 2008. My fiancee is Atheist and I was raised Pentecostal Christian. I don't believe my family realizes that with my fiancee though. So here is my question.....

I am trying to find a Wedding reading that does not over power one religion over the other but is not that noticeable that he is Atheist. I know he doesn't care if there is a reading with God in it but I know that sometimes it makes him feel uncomfortable.

Any suggestions on what kind of readings to have durring the wedding?

  1. This is what we are having read at our wedding... good luck

    On Love

    Brother Thomas a Kempis

    Love is a mighty power, a great and complete good. Love alone lightens every burden, and makes rough places smooth.

    It bears every hardship as though it were nothing, and renders all bitterness sweet and acceptable.

    Nothing is sweeter than love, Nothing stronger,

    Nothing higher, Nothing wider,

    Nothing more pleasant,

    Nothing fuller or better in heaven or earth; for love is born of God.

    Love flies, runs and leaps for joy. It is free and unrestrained.

    Love knows no limits, but ardently transcends all bounds.

    Love feels no burden, takes no account of toil,

    attempts things beyond its strength.

    Love sees nothing as impossible, for it feels able to achieve all things.

    It is strange and effective,

    while those who lack love faint and fail.

    Love is not fickle and sentimental, nor is it intent on vanities.

    Like a living flame and a burning torch,

    it surges upward and surely surmounts every obstacle

  2. talk to your officiant about it.  There are several choices for officiant that are not religious.  Me and my fiance are both wiccan and my daughter is being raised mormon, so dont listen to that other post.  Ultimately we make our own choices and your children, if you chose to have any, will make their own choice no matter how hard they are pushed either way.

  3. Why not try something from the Song of Solomon? It is romantic, yet biblical

    Song of Solomon, the Old Testament

    I am my beloveds and my beloved is mine

    My beloved speaks and says to me:

    "Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away;

    for lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone.

    The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come,

    and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land

    The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom;

    they give forth fragrance.

    Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

    I am my beloveds and my beloved is mine

    O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the covert of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice,

    for your voice is sweet, and your face is comely.

    Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm;

    for love is strong as death, jealousy is cruel as the grave.

    It flashes are flashes of fire, a most vehement flame

    Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it.

    If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house,

    it would be utterly scorned.

    I am my beloveds and my beloved is mine

  4. As a Christian you aren't supposed to marry a non-christian. Just to let you know most Pastors/Preachers will not marry you, nor will they let you be married in the church if they know that.

    What you are choosing to do is difficult and wrong. How are your children going to be raised? Christian? Atheist?

    How as a Christian are you ok with someone who doesn't believe there is a God? You are ok with the prospect of your soul mate burning in he**?

  5. try poetry instead of a bible verse here is a site with some possible readings.  It has three types Religious, Poetry, and Other.  You may be able to find a good compromise here.

    Oh and P.S.  Please don't hold what BrntChkn says (or what ever) against all christians.  I'm a christian and I like to follow the verse that says "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".  Stop judging.

  6. The traditional wedding reading is 1 Cor and it is merely about love.  "Love is patient, love is kind".  Song of Solomon is another great idea.  Though another idea is not to do a bible reading.  Do an Irish blessing instead.  There are many of them and they are great.

    Pick up a Rainbow bible.  It has all the passages about love mentioned in a certain color (i think pink).  Very few of them are actually about God and being Christian.  If you spend some time looking over it, you could find several that suit your needs.
