im a getting married but im a bit confused. we going to get married by city hall in chicago but we are also want a religous ceremony. at this point since i am not confirmed we can not get married by church so we decided to "rent" an officiant. my question is the weddings officiant suppose to give us a wedding certificate also just like the church would or is the church ceritificate the same as the city hall certificate?

my main plan is to get married by city hall and get the blessing of god.so would getting married by an officiant be a waste of money if i dont get married IN church but a hall? this is sooooooooooo confusing help me please

  1. The wedding certificate you get is the paper that legalizes the marriage, and the only thing the church does is sign to certify that you guys have had a legal ceremony (in case of a ceremony in church, it serves as a religious ceremony too).

My point is, YOU get the marriage license (not the church) and bring it to the registered officiant, they perform the ceremony and sign the license, certifying that the ceremony has been done, as per state requirements, and once that is sent, and recorded by the state, they send you a CERTIFIED copy, which is your marriage certificate.

You get a certificate, no matter which certified officiant you use...

So save the money from city hall, get a legal officiant, and do it all at once.

  2. You'll get your marriage certificate when you have your civil ceremony. There will be no need for a second certificate, but you might want to have a copy of your vows or something made up as a keepsake. If a spiritual ceremony is what you really want, then spending a little extra for a religious officiant is never a waste of money.

  3. you could always find a preacher that would marry you . alot of times they will meet you anywhere you want to get married like a park or home.. the marriage lic you get before hand is the same no matter what the priest or judge will sign it then mail it in to the state thenyou will get your certificate in the mail .no matter who marries you the cer. will come from the state.. i would get a priest to marry you. i went to the court house and am very happy that i did  . but i dont believe in having a wedding you wont be happy with . you can never redo the real thing
