Question:

Weed Problems?

Can anyone tell me how to kill weeds on a driveway that is covered by rocks. The dirt under the driveway is just barnyard dirt and I cannot seem to control it with round up or your vegetation killer. I am trying to avoid the expense of paving it with cement. Is there a product available to purchase that would kill the weeds permanently? Would a professional that sprays be able to kill the weeds permanently? I really don't want to fool around with strong chemicals, but these weeds are driving me crazy and I am unable to keep up with it because it is a cabin on a lake that I am not around everyday. Also, is there something a guy could broadcast with one of those spreaders on two wheels ? 10 points

  1. I like to keep things as natural as possible when ever I can.

I would think that a professional would be able to eliminate the weeds, you may have to have it done again next year.

This one is pricey and something most people don’t think of but cheaper than paving drive

  2. Weeds are eternal.

No professional would be able to guarantee a permanent one time application. Like you they can only try to control them. Most of the really strong chemicals have been taken off of the market, because non-professionals were misusing them (too much, too often, or in the wrong places).

There is something you can broadcast with a spreader.

It's a Pre-Emergent. Like the name says it has to be spread before the weeds emerge. It will not work on growing weeds.

Ask the garden center to make sure you are buying the correct Pre-Emergent at the correct time. As has been said previous, some chemicals are specific to specific types of weeds. Now would be a good time to bring in a sample.

Check also effects on the nearby lake, because you do not want any runoff.

Timing is everything, and especially with weeds.

Once they start growing they are ahead of you.

The key is to get ahead of them, using the least toxic way possible. As has been mentioned neighbors are a great resource, and knowing when and what they do is great information.

    This is an ongoing problem.

Maybe you should compare the cost of concrete to the time, energy and chemicals you have to use.

  3. What people dont realize is that there are specific weed killers for spec. plants.  They immediately jump to products like Round-up that "eliminates everything."   Plus that affects the underground waters too and drains/sewers.  I never use it bec. I have a well on my property, as well as my neighbors.

I had some weeds that were very bad in my part of the country and I found out the specific chemical that would kill them. They said nothing else worked on them. Interesting, huh? not even Round-up.  And, sure enough they are all gone now.

So, I would go to a professional and ask him to give you the specifics, ...not just "take care of it."  but ask him what are the names of the weeds and what kind of chemicals work on them. That way you will know they are experts and not just randomly spraying a mixture of who knows what.  I would ask a neighbor who has a nice yard if they have someone to recommend.  -or- Check your Yellow-pgs. for people who work specifically in your area, so they will know your weeds (& climate & seasons etc etc), and who have been in business at least 10 yrs.   ==But asking your neighbors will get you out and meeting new people and it will be a good thing! who knows what all else you will learn!
