The Bennington Museum was founded as the Bennington Historical Association in 1875 to celebrate Bennington’s Colonial past and, more specifically, to commemorate the historic Revolutionary War Battle of Bennington in 1777.

John Spargo (1876-1966), born and raised in Cornwall, England, came to America in 1901.  Spargo moved to Bennington in 1909, and during World War I he turned his energies to Vermont history.  In 1927, he became president of the Vermont Historical Society from which position he helped to establish a formal Bennington Museum, serving as its director and curator for the next 28 years.  

In 1928, the Bennington Museum's current building was built around the original St. Francis de Sales church.  The Museum has occupied this stone-and-column building since 1928.

The Bennington Museum was originally opened in 1928. The museum was built around the original St. Francis de Sales church, which now houses the Church Gallery section of the museum. The Museum has many wonderful collections on exhibition including a collection of pottery manufactured in Bennington between the years of 1793 and 1894.

The Old First Church dates to 1805--it replaced a 1763 meeting house on the spot--and the cemetery is also the final resting place for five Vermont governors and many of the brave volunteers who died at the Battle of Bennington in 1777.
