I need to calucalate the weight of this bridge project. I'm just making sure I'm right. Is an H14x89 55' total weight 4,895 pounds?

  1. I'm getting something right in that range, so you're probably very close.

    Calculations:

    W = D x L x A

    where W is weight in lbs,

    D is density in lbs/cubic inch (0.281 from http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_de...

    L is length in inches (55' given),

    and A is area in square inches for 14X89 (26.1 from http://www.pilelineonline.com/pdfs/DFP_H...

    W= 0.283 x (55 x 12) x 26.1 = 4875 lbs

    There's a 0.4% difference between your answer and mine, so I'd call it good.


  2. Wow, let's do this the easy way (also known as the right way)... 89 lbs (per foot) multiplied by 55 feet, 89 x 55 = 4895! You are absolutely correct.
