  1. It depends on HOW you are adopting.. Is it a family members baby.. are you going through an attorney... through foster care or an agency?  I would need a lot more information in order to answer.

Overall Yes it takes heaps of money, time, and back ground checks, and references!

Oh, and good luck I 100% support adoption!  I am excited for you!

  2. It varies from state to state and depends on what kind of adoption (domestic newborn, international, or adoption from U.S. foster care).

However, in all kinds of adoption you'll need: a homestudy (the process will vary depending on the agency and the state), a background check, and informational classes on adoption.

International adoption is usually the most expensive, with the average cost being about $35,000 to $40,000. Then comes domestic newborn adoption, usually about $25,000 to $30,000. Finally, there is adoption from U.S. foster care, which is extremely low-cost (free, nearly free, or sometimes to your financial advantage--if you adopt a special needs child, there are subsidies and stipends available).

The time varies drastically depending on the type of adoption you choose, your geographic locale, and what you're open to accepting (special needs? older child? any race? open adoption?). International also varies according to which country you're adopting from. So, depending on those factors, the wait for a child (after completing the homestudy and other requirements) could take anywhere from a couple weeks to several years.

If you are just starting to think about adoption, I'd highly suggest you (a) research the different types of adoption and (b) start reading books and blogs about adoption.... especially anything written by adoptees. Also, delve into the ethical considerations surrounding adoption issues. There are a lot of myths about adoption out there, and it's going to be hard for you to make an informed choice about which type of adoption to pursue if you don't first acquaint yourself with the ramifications of each option.

Here's a couple sites for you to start with:

    http://www.soulofadoption.com

(Soul of Adoption-- a forum for adoptive parents, adoptees, and birth parents--tons of great info and perspectives)

    http://www.ethicanet.org/itemlist.php?pa...

(Ethica--an organization dedicated to ethical adoption)

    http://www.adoptioninstitute.org/index.p...

(Evan B. Donaldson Institute--an adoption research organization)

  3. I would go to adoption.com or do a google search on adoption. You will find heaps of information that you need! =)
