What's a Bruiser?

My friend is calling over with her new partner, she say's he is a proper "Bruiser". Does anyone know what this means?

It comes orginally from 18th century and meant a boxer who was "strong and hit hard".  Retired and neurologically damaged boxers were hired as strongmen / body guards / gangsters / bar bouncers / "gorillas", etc. and the word morphed into meaning either a strong hard hitting man OR a thug.  The word "bruiser" does still carry with it a slight connotation of the original meaning that includes the neurological damage suffered in boxing, a sort of a "gentle dumb giant".
