What's an assist?

In hockey, they talk about how many assists the players did, but i don't really know what they're talking about.

An assist is this.  

If the game is in Pittsburgh and a Penguin scores the goal and Crosby is on the ice, an assist goes to Crosby, even if he doesn't touch the puck.

Check out the empty net goal in the Flyers series which should have been unassisted.

An assist is when a person passes the puck to the person who scored. So if you hear someone say " I got an assist" it means that they were the person who passed the puck to the scoring person. A goal and an assist are both worth 1 point in stats even though goals are more recognized.

The person that passes the puck to the player who scores is the one who gets the assist.

So basically they assisted in the goal, but werent the ones who actually scored.

An assist in hockey is to pass the puck to a player on your team who then scores without the opponent touching the puck.

he 'assisted' the goal being made, so that's how he gets credit... by getting a point.
