My sister and I are going to Italy in October, a first for both of us. We want to be on a tight budget so we want to get the most for our money. Any thoughts are appreciated. Also, what not to miss in purchases...

  1. Since you're going in October, it will be the low season and hotels will be relatively inexpensive.

I cannot urge strongly enough that you visit Venice.  IMHO, anyone who has not been there has led an incomplete life.  Now, hotels inside Venice proper can be a little pricey, but if you do some internet shopping you can get a reasonable rate.  You might also consider staying in one of the towns directly outside of Venice and taking public transportation back and forth.  Last year, we arrived a day earlier than our hotel reservation, so we spent one night at the Hotel Raffaello in Spinea.  It was clean and modern, and cost less than $100 per night, including breakfast.  There is a bus stop outside that takes you to where you get the boat to Venice.  It's not a long trip.

If you're not going that far north, I would recommend spending some time along the Amalfi coast.  The towns of Sorrento, Positano, and Amalfi are beautiful.  You can travel between them by bus.

Farther north, there are three nice cities, Santa Margerita, Rapallo, and Portofino.  Thery are coastal cities and you can take a boat back and forth.  Although, in October it might be a bit chilly.  There are also buses.

In a final analysis, anywhere you go in Italy is wonderful.

    Buon viaggio.

  3. Can you give more information? Have you made any reservations, how long are you staying? Do you like art, history, scenery or weather better? What do you mean by a tight budget? Low-end hotel cheap or hostel cheap? How old are you? Etc.

    good travel

  5. I was in Amalfi for 5 nights, a beautiful place to visit. I stayed in a condominium, very nice,  Went to the pizzeria and bought pizza for $4.  & $6. euros and also went ot the market and bout their beer for abut $1.50 euros, while If I ate at a restorante, the pizza would cost me $10.00 and the beer would cost me $5. euros.  I also eat at restaurants. but eating in was one way to save money.  I went to Ravello, took the bus for $1. euro. went to the Inland of Capri. it took about a hour in a boat. I think I paid $34. euros around trip.

If you go to Venice, stay in the Inland of Lido.  A beautiful place to be only 15 minutes away from St Marks in Venice by vaporetto, (water taxi) I stayed at the Hotel Rigel.  A very nice place and included breakfast.

    Have a great time.
