What's wrong with my window?

I have a 20 inch window fan, which is standard size, but it won't fit in ANY of my home windows. My windows open, but not hardly enough to fit the fan. All the other homes I have lived in were able to fit this fan. Is there something wrong with the windows that they don't even open as much???

Nothing wrong with them at all, just a different size and style.

If the window measures large enough for the fan, and the house is comparatively new, there may be stops in the slide channels to prevent the window opening enough to allow burglars to enter, or to take your stuff out through the window if it is a ground floor window.  If it is 2nd floor or higher it might be a child protection thing.

Some are built in and some are added.

Are they vinyl replacements?  They make the opening smaller.

Sounds like you windows are not standard size.
