What Exactly Is A "Brainfreeze"?

I know it happens when you drink something really cold, really fast...but why does it feel like you brain is freezing?

"The effect occurs when something very cold, like ice cream, touches the top palate in the mouth. The blood vessels constrict due to the cold. As the palate warms, the blood vessels suddenly enlarge and the blood rushes back to the blood vessels. The nerves in this area send a signal for pain to the front of the brain, resulting in a brief headache."

There are two kinds. One is the pain you get in your head and/or neck when you eat or drink too much of something really cold. The other kind is that sudden blank empty-headed (and sometimes screeching halt) feeling you get for a few seconds when your thoughts or computations are going too fast and you suddenly loose track of what it is you were thinking so hard about. Like being temporarily stumped until you stop and refresh your thought process.
