  1. There are two basic types of club manufacture: forgings and castings.

In forgings the metal is beaten into shape (originally by hand, and today by machinery). This is supposed to align the grain and produce a sweeter feel.

Castings are made by pouring metal into a mold. It's cheaper and allows the manufacturer to create shapes that can't be made in a forging (such as seriously undercut heads)

  2. The forging of an iron is a process to shape the clubhead/face.  Irons are either forged or cast.  Both are a process to shape the clubhead/face.  Forgings are typically for better players, but there have been iron sets that are forged that were designed for mid-to-high handicap players.  MacGregor designed forged irons a few years ago for every level of play.  In my opinion, and others share the same opinion, hitting the sweet spot on a forged iron is sweeter than on a cast iron.  I started out using a cast iron then switched to a forged iron(at the time I didn't realize it) and could not get over how much different it felt.  I won't play anything else but forged irons.  Examples of forged irons are Callaway X-forged, Titleist AP-2, Nike Forged Blades, Mizuno MP-57, Srixon I-701, and Tour Edge Exotic Blades

  3. Letsgo,

They other 2 answers you got are correct. But they failed to mention that the main reason for forging irons is the feel. A forged iron is softer then a casted iron. Not only that but the forged irons are usually made with a chrome finish. The casted irons are usually made from stainless steel or other harder metals.

The forged irons are played by most pros and very low handicappers because of the soft feel they generate when making contact with the ball. Which makes them comfortable and comfort is probably the number 1 reason for playing this type of iron.

    Hope this helps.
