Question:

What are hummus and falafel?

I know hummus has something to do with chickpeas/garbanzo beans, but I have no idea what falafel is.

I'm trying to pack good vegetarian lunches, and these are always recommended. I'm getting pretty tired of eating sandwiches all the time, so it would be nice to try something different.

  1. Falafel is a middle eastern food, made from chickpeas. Its usually eaten with bread and yogurt. At my husbands store, he makes falafel sandwiches with salad all in one. Falafel if very tasty if made correctly.

    The only thing i would changed is instead of mashing the chickpeas, grind them instead. The texture is a whole lot better.

    Hummus is basically ground up chickpeas with oil mixed in.

  2. You are correct about hummus. It is a dip made from a puree of chickpeas, olive oil, sometimes tahini (sesame) dressing & sea salt. There are many variations of hummus in the stores these days.

    Regarding falafels, they are indeed delicious especially when all of the ingredients are really fresh.. A falafel is a meal made of a patty or a small meatball sized ball of fried mashed/pureed chickpea & or fava beans, cucumber slices, tahini dressing stuffed into a pita pocket bread. You really should give it a try.  

  3. The ingredients for both are chickpeas or maybe their also called garbanzo beans...I've tried falafel's and their hella good, it gives you a bad taste in your mouth coz i think they put garlic in them (depending on who makes them i guess)...Try them out and see if you'll like it

  4. falafal's main ingredient is also chickpeas, but also has other ground up vegetables, as well as some form of starch.  It is rolled into balls and deepfried.  

    It is absolutely DELICIOUS!

  5. As you said hummus are chick peas. and it is like a white sauce to eat with falafel.

    u mix chick peas with salt, white pepper, lemon, vinegar and parsley and blend them all.

    falafel is kind of white beans mixed with lots of green leaves like green onion, parsley,lots of garlic.

    mix them all in the blender or a food processor to get soft dough. u will need to add water too while mixing.

    then u shape it like a meat ball or finger then deep fry it from each side

    u can make it sandwich in peta bread with green salad or tehina or hummus.



    u can buy it frozen from any Arabic super market and just fry them when u want (it is much easier and personally, i prefer that)

    also u can buy the sandwich ready from any Arabic restaurant

    it is delicious.
