  1. layers are used to organize your art in fireworks it lets you delete a portion of what you want, not the whole thing

  2. Layers are like pieces of transparent cellophane that you can draw on.

It lets you seperate different parts of an image, and move them around independantly of each other.

For example, I have a layer called "sky" and another layer called "Bird". I draw a blue background on Sky and draw a magpie on "Bird". Stacking them on top of each other makes it appear as though the bird is in the sky, if the layer is made transparent, I can see through the parts that I have not drawn on.

Since they are on different layers, I can move and reposition the magpie as i want, because the magpie is drawn as a seperate image from the Sky, as a different layer. If I want, I can also delete the Bird layer, while leaving the Sky layer untouched.

  3. It's how different parts of an image are arranged. You can put an image on the bottom layer, like a photo. Then on top put a green rectangle and lower the alpha (transparency), then you will see some of the layer underneath showing through. Then you can edit text layers etc etc, whatever, and come back to the image later on and be able to still move these objects around. Some files are flat, like JPG files, which you cannot edit - like you can't take the mince out from a lasagne - it's one item. Wth PNG or PSD files for example, you can have layers which you can then come back and move around etc
