  1. Anything that is bad for you is mostly refined.

  2. I have never even heard of refined carbs before!

SO I did some research to not only answer your question, but educate myself also!

Ok so they say "good" carbs are the carbs found in breads, crackers, pastas, and cereals made with whole wheat, along with fruits and vegetables.  So "refined" carbs are Bad carbs, anything that has been processed with machinery, fast food etc.

Refined carbohydrates refers to foods where machinery has been used to remove the high fibre bits (the bran and the germ) from the grain. White rice, white bread, sugary cereals, and pasta and noodles made from white flour are all examples of refined carbohydrates.

Unrefined carbohydrates still contain the whole grain, including the bran and the germ, so they're higher in fibre and will keep you feeling fuller for longer - great if you're trying to lose weight and hate feeling hungry. Examples include wholegrain rice, wholemeal bread, porridge oats and wholewheat pasta.

If you'd like to eat more fibre or beat hunger pangs, try these healthy swaps:

    Refined                         Unrefined

Frosted flakes swat for  Bran flakes

White toast    swap for  Porridge oats

    Cereal            swap for  Rice cakes

French bread  swap for  Wholemeal bread

Normal pasta  swap for  Wholewheat pasta

Breadstick      swap for   Dark rye crispbread

This was a great question! I am in the process of loosing weight!  Amazing what you can learn!

  3. Refined carbohydrate is the opposite of complexed carbs.  Complexed carbohydrates are as they are reaped from the garden - the yam, potatoes, etc.  When foods are processed and some of its nutrients are taken out then these are referred to as refined.  Therefore white flower and all white flower product such as bread, biscuits bun etc., would be refined carbohydrate.  Sugar would also be refined carbohydrate.

  4. processed sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, bread that's not 100% whole wheat.
