What are snails purpose?

me and my friend were looking at snails in my backyard and she told me to put salt on them. i told her no because snails have purposes. can someone please help me?

they are living things and they don't need to have a meaning for you not to put salt on them for fun!      Don't you agree??

Well, to start with, if there's a bug or a creature just cruising around, not harming anything, what reason do you have to kill it?

Snails are decomposers. They help break down dead things. They're very important to the environment.
