  1. Simple and fun:

    -Big 2

    -Oh h**l

    -Agurk

Bridge is fabulous, but hard to learn. Oh h**l is a good way to start playing a trick-taking game.

    Rules are all on www.pagat.com

  2. Well, did you know that tarot cards were invented for playing card games? Don't worry, most of them are played with French suited packs that you wouldn't recognize as tarot at all:

These games have been played for nearly 600 years and are still very popular throughout continental Europe. They are all point-trick games, like bridge or whist, players win cards in tricks but unlike them, different cards carry different point values - so it is not the number of tricks but the number of card points in them that matter. I have always enjoyed these games for both their strategic and social elements. If you are looking for good social games for grown-ups, then I think you will find what you are looking for in them.

There is considerable variation in the games and style of play but if you like games of fixed partnerships, then Ottocento is one to try. Probably the best known game for English speakers is the French tarot (I gather it is now the second most popular card game there), which has versions for 3, 4, and 5 players.

You can find the rules to 25 of the games with Anglicized terms on my own site:

and about a dozen of the games with their original language terms at:
